Rather, its neon, polka dots, or paisleys, the summer fashion trends for 2019 have already been decided. There is nothing more important in fashion than relevance. Many trends will fade overnight, while others continue to endure the testaments of time. Are you ready to go shopping?
These are some of the top 9 fashion trends for spring 2019.
Boho Chic
Boho, which is short for Bohemian, is a trend that is influenced by the free spirit, hippie lifestyle of the 60s and 70s and continues to have a strong influence on our fashion and culture. Even if you weren’t alive to experience Woodstock, you can still channel it through fashion, while discovering your own inner hippie. Boho style often incorporates neutral tones, such as tans, beiges, browns and greens; and plenty of layers. But an authentic Boho look wouldn’t complete without incorporating a plethora of colorful accessories.
When most people think of “Bohemian fashion” they instantly think of beads, fringed handbags, flower dresses, and clunky wooden jewelry, but Boho fashion can be so much more. You can mix and match different styles and merge elements of Americana and Modernism, creating a uniquely chic look of your own. But this playful style isn’t limited to just women; there are many men such as Johnny Depp and Hollywood hunk Jason Momoa who continue to rock the Bohemian look.
Floral Prints
Floral print and patterns are a trend that will never go out of style because there is nothing people love more than floral in fashion. There’s just something about that vibrant, colorful floral print that puts a smile on my face, which is probably why floral patterns have been incorporated into our fashion style for hundreds of years. If you’re a Boho lover, then I’m sure you understand the greatness of floral.
Floral prints are more than a pretty design, it can also be a statement piece used to symbolize femininity that comes in many different styles, textures, and colors. It’s simplistic and easy to wear. Floral prints often feature soft tones and beautifully delicate patterns, which can also be worn to represent the changing of the seasons. Floral prints are just as relevant today, as they were 500 years ago. Often times, when a person thinks of floral prints, their mind automatically imagines flowery sundresses and flip flops, but you can also match floral prints with solid colors or have a bag with small floral print to accent your outfit.
Although floral print may not be a masculine theme, designers such as Dries Van Noten often incorporate floral prints such as daisies, mixed with a military jacket to offset the balance, creating an edgy but delicate look.
Polka Dots
You may have recently heard that polka dots have made a comeback, but in all honesty polka dots are a trend that never really left. Polka dots are simplistic and minimalist, chic and stylish but it can also be fun and playful, it’s an iconic look that continues to invade our wardrobes and endure the tests of time.
One of the reasons I love polka dots so much is primarily because it’s easily interchangeable and transitional. Polka dots are a timeless look that can be causual, simply by adding a polka dot midi dress and a pair of flip flops or you mix it up by incorporating a belted blazer and some leather pumps. From swimsuits, blouses, accessories, and designer handbags, the polka dot craze is taking over this summer.
Layers!ย Layers!ย Layers!
When it comes to fashion, layering is king. Summer layering may seem a bit strange, but unless you plan on spending your summer on a Caribbean beach, you’ll probably need to put on some clothes. It doesn’t matter if it’s 70 or 20 degrees outside, a little layering never hurts. In the warmer months, you can incorporate lighter materials like linen, voile, and chiffon or shorts and a windbreaker. One of the most important rules of layering is blending different textures, but at the end of the day, it’s all about contrast.
Print on Print
Although print on print can be a risky fashion choice, it’s one that’s well worth it. Imagine a geometric t-shirt with an abstract printed skirt or a geometric abstract printed long sleeve tucked into a floral printed mini skirt. When mixing your favorite prints, you should try and stay within the same color family, which works as long as each print has at least one color in common.
Jumpsuits
Jumpsuits will undoubtedly be this summer’s unrivaled fashion trend; rather it’s a jumpsuit for a party, a denim jumpsuit, or a black layered jumpsuit, the jumpsuit has become a must-have outfit.
The first thing to come to mind when a person thinks of a jumpsuit is more than likely a 70s nightclub or disco, but this retro onesie has recently decided to make a comeback. The jumpsuit is often considered the epitome of a modern woman’s wardrobe, there comfortable, easily wearable, and perfect for a woman on the go. Everyone from Mick Jagger to Farrah Fawcett has rocked the jumpsuit. It’s by far one of the most iconic interchangeable and recognizable looks you can have.
A jumpsuit can be stylish and playful but it’s also easily transitional and by simply adding jewelry and a blazer, it can be an elegant formal look.
Neon
The fashion industry’s obsession with nostalgia and resurrecting the ’80s has never been more apparent, which is why neon is here to stay. This summer neon is expected to make a comeback. 80s everything, from tie-dye neon shirts to shoulder-padded suits, just make sure you’re prepared to turn on those fluorescent shades. Rather it’s lime green, hot pink, or violet, neon is a must try trend this season.
Paisley Patterns
Clothing with paisley patterns isn’t just a pretty design. The floral spray combined with a cypress tree actually has a far deeper meaning; the Iranian pattern is meant to symbolize life and eternity, which is probably why the pattern continues to be relevant. In the 1960s the paisleys spiked in popularity, but the pattern has diffidently evolved from being a theme commonly featured on shawls and bandanas. There are paisley socks, swim trunks, and of course paisley neckties.
This gender neutral design is a staple and must own item for both men and women alike, rather it’s a paisley tea dress, paisley printed blazer, or paisley printed top. For those of you who are fed up with floral, you might want to give paisleys a try.
Oversized Handbags
It’s time to push the micro-bags aside because big handbags are making a comeback, which is why many fashion insiders say big is the new small. Rather, it’s Fendi, Prada, Chanel, or a Gucci handbag, “Big is in” which is exactly what many insiders were saying at Paris fashion week. I mean I could more than likely fit everything I need into my Gucci handbag, my phone, my credit cards, keys, but why am I spending 10 minutes trying to cram all my essentials into a micro-sized handbag?
An oversized handbag doesn’t have to be a big, clunky, and impractical. Many top designers such as Demna Gvasalia, who introduced his Balenciaga’s leather shopper in 2016, pride themselves on their uniquely oversized creations; but you don’t have to spend $3000 on an oversized bag, retailers such as Topshop and Zara feature a variety of different jumbo styles.
In Conclusion
Those are just 9 of our favorite fashion trends for spring 2019 but there are plenty more you can enjoy if you’re daring! For myself shopping in the maternity section this spring, I’m going to aim for florals and jumpsuits!
