Exposure to Baby Food with Heavy Metals and Tylenol Can Harm Children’s Neurodevelopment – 6 Alternatives to Toxic Products

At the moment, 1 in 36 children struggles with autism nationwide, a disorder characterized by problems with social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. While the cause of autism is unknown, there are many risk factors that might contribute to its development, such as certain genetic conditions. Still, a more obscure risk factor for autism is toxic exposure. Children exposed to acetaminophen in the womb are 19% more likely to develop autism, according to a study from the European Journal of Epidemiology. So, pregnant women should avoid taking this medication, sold under the name Tylenol, excessively or in high doses.

Furthermore, exposure to heavy metals from baby food might also contribute to the development of the disorder. In the winter of 2021, a congressional investigation exposed four major baby food companies for allowing dangerous arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury concentrations in their products. These naturally occurring metals are neurotoxic, which means frequent exposure can irreversibly affect children’s developing brains. Beech-Nut, one of the oldest baby food manufacturers in the country, was found to allow 886 ppb lead and 344 ppb cadmium in its raw ingredients when the maximum limit for both metals is only 5 ppb.

Because infants and toddlers have a higher nutrient update by the gastrointestinal tract, they can absorb a greater concentration of toxic metals from baby food. If a child is mostly fed commercial baby food, they might at first show neurotoxicity signs such as weakness or numbness in the arms and legs, headaches, and cognitive or behavioral problems. Over time, as heavy metals accumulate in their brain, these symptoms might give way to autism.

The existence of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in the brain will cause oxidative stress, which occurs when there are too many unstable molecules known as free radicals in the body and not enough antioxidants to destroy them. Oxidative stress can be a sign of autism, as many children with the disorder have greater levels than is healthy. For instance, exposure to mercury will cause neurotrophin-3, a marker of oxidative stress, to be present in the child’s body.

Even though all heavy metals are neurotoxic, lead is particularly harmful to the developing brain, as it can cause permanent mental capacity loss. Many children who survive lead poisoning are left with intellectual disabilities and behavioral disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. The prevalence of autism has been increasing at a very alarming rate, from just 1 in 150 children in 2000. While this may be due to better diagnosis tests, ingesting toxic baby food and in-utero exposure to acetaminophen might also be significant contributors.

3 Natural Alternatives to Tylenol for Pregnant Women

Approximately 50% of pregnant women use acetaminophen worldwide. However, it is important to note that only those who take the medication excessively have a higher risk of giving birth to a child with autism. Using Tylenol occasionally is unlikely to impact neurodevelopment. If you are looking for natural pain relievers, these are some alternatives to acetaminophen you can try.

Cloves

Due to containing eugenol, a natural pain reliever, cloves are also used to manage pain such as headaches, arthritic inflammation, and toothaches. Eugenol is one of the active ingredients in cloves that is effective in numbing the nerves in the area you apply it, providing temporary pain relief. Toothaches can be alleviated by dampening a cotton ball with clove oil and placing it on the painful area.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains the antioxidant curcumin, which can ease swelling and reduce inflammation. Studies have shown that turmeric may have pain-relieving properties equal in some cases to those of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory properties, so it can also reduce fever. If you have a mild fever, you can drink a glass of turmeric milk or chew on a chunk of turmeric with a pinch of salt.

Boswellia

Otherwise known as frankincense, Boswellia is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a pain reliever. It comes in the form of tinctures, pills, and topical treatments. It can be effective in reducing inflammation and easing pain and stiffness. While Boswellia is generally safe, topical application can cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is best to apply a small amount when you are using it for the first time.

3 Safer Alternatives to Baby Food

A study found that up to 95% of baby food on the market contains at least one toxic metal. The study results were made public before the congressional investigation, which confirmed that most store-bought baby food is tainted with heavy metals. So, it is only natural to want to find safer alternatives for your developing child. These are three ways you can reduce the amount of toxic metals in your child’s diet.

Choosing Natural Alternatives Instead of Commercial Baby Food

This is a suggestion from the previous study led by the non-profit organization Healthy Babies Bright Futures. The following are four natural alternatives to commercial baby food you can feed your infant or toddler:

  • rice-free snacks instead of rice snacks to lower the heavy metal content by 93%
  • plain water instead of fruit juice to reduce the heavy metal content by 68%
  • a cold banana instead of teething biscuits to lower the heavy metal content by 91%
  • other fresh produce instead of sweet potatoes to reduce the heavy metal content by 73%

Breastfeeding for One Year or Longer

While over 80% of American mothers breastfeed, few keep doing so for one year or longer, as pediatricians recommend. Breastfeeding for as long as you can will delay your child’s need for baby food and will also bring about numerous health benefits. Children who were breastfed have a lower risk of asthma, diabetes, lung infections, and stomach bugs. Women who breastfeed have a decreased risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, and breast cancer.

Avoid Feeding Your Child Rice Too Often

Rice can absorb 20 times more arsenic from the soil and water it grows in than other crops. So, it is not a good idea to feed your child white rice often. When you do cook it, make sure to add plenty of water that you drain off when the meal is ready. Better alternatives to white rice are basmati and sushi rice, as they contain less arsenic.

Are you still unsure about what food to feed your baby? By virtue of the Toxic Baby Food Replacement Initiative, you can now request nourishing, safe, non-toxic products made by ethical companies that test for toxic metals and other dangerous contaminants. All you have to do to receive free baby food is fill out the form at the bottom of the page, and someone will contact you for more details.

As a parent, you want to ensure that your baby is well-fed and receiving all of the nutrients necessary to grow strong and healthy. Nowadays, a lot of the products we see displayed on the shelves of supermarkets are heavily processed and full of sugar.

Make sure to ditch these ingredients and opt for preparing meals filled with superfoods instead. If you’re not sure where or how to get started, carry on reading about superfoods for baby, this is the article for you!

Your baby needs a range of macro and micronutrients in order to grow strong and tall. All meals should follow the Australian dietary guidelines and include plenty of fats, zinc, iron, protein, and vitamins C, D, and A.

Superfoods are ingredients that have a very high nutritional density, meaning that they provide the body with an extensive amount of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. These foods tend to be mostly plant-based, although some fish and dairy can also be considered superfoods.

Here are some of our favorite superfoods for baby:

Avocado

Avocados are considered a superfood because they provide the body with a large number of monounsaturated fats, also known as good fats. This delicious fruit can be introduced to your baby as early as six months and it contains high amounts of fiber, magnesium, and potassium.

Avocados work great as a no-cook snack, just mash them up or combine them in a fruit salad with mangoes, apricots, or bananas.

Dark Leafy Vegetables

Leafy veggies like spinach, collard greens, and kale are full of iron, vitamin C, and vitamin A. However, these should be introduced to babies after the 8-month mark. These vegetables contain zeaxanthin and lutein, two carotenoids that help improve vision

Serve these with garlic, onions, eggs, or meat. Fruit smoothies and vegetable purees are also fantastic ways to combine these greens.

Full Fat Yogurt

Yogurt contains a great deal of vitamin B12, B6, A, and D. It is a natural probiotic which can help bone growth due to its high levels of calcium. However, given that it is a dairy product, it can cause allergies, so introduce this ingredient with care.

Add a bit of fruit puree to the yogurt or cut up pieces of fruit to serve a nutritionally rich snack.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes can be introduced to babies as young as six months. These vegetables are full of antioxidants, calcium, iron, fiber, vitamin C, and D, making them excellent superfoods.

These can be peeled, boiled, and mashed into a puree for babies who are not yet used to eating solids. If not, they can be baked in the oven and served with broccoli and meat.

If you are still finding it difficult to include all of the right nutrients and ingredients in your baby’s meals, try creating a meal plan for the week or get a meal delivery service like Little Spoon to get fresh, organic baby food delivered right to your door. This will help you stay organized and hopefully save you some time when deciding what to give your baby for lunch or dinner. Use coupon code LS-SARAHJEAN to save $20 off your first order!

Once your infant starts with their baby food, there come many problems with their laundry-stain fighting! This could be a challenging task since many times, and regular detergent fails to work. Messy eating in children is normal and fun, even if it gets super messy at times. However, before diving into tips to get rid of stains, using the right utensils such as suction base baby weaning cups and bowls can help you a ton to prevent spills and messes.

Although it’s not hard to find a quality blender for baby food, the same is not correct for stain remover. So what do you do?

Here is the list of five best stain removers that come to your rescue to get our baby food stains.

Zout

Zout works wonders and is incredibly useful. You just need to wash your stained clothes by pouring some of the liquid and rubbing it in thoroughly, then wait and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then wash in a regular manner. The best thing about Zout is, it does not contain chlorine or bleach, which makes it entirely safe for all white and washable fabrics, including children’s clothes. Also, it is color-safe and fragrance-free and is best for babies with sensitive skin.

Cascade Dishwasher Detergent

Cascade is the second best thing after Zout. Buy the powder one, make a paste with it, then rub it thoroughly to the stained area and let it sit in. Once you are done, just wash it as usual. One of the good things about Cascade is it does not contain any dye and is perfume-free, which makes it just as good for the baby.

Also, it has a bleaching effect, which makes it appropriate for light-colored and white garments. It is one of the best detergents to remove stain instantly.

OMO Auto Washing Liquid

Dealing with stains becomes easy with OMO Washing liquid. It can claim full stain removal for baby food stains. You just have to pour a small amount of liquid onto the stained area and let it sit in for a few minutes. Massage the detergent gently and then wash it as usual. Some of the best things about OMO Washing Liquid is it removes baby food stains faster than the regular detergent and is an expert at removing tough stains.

It penetrates deeper in fibers of the clothes and removes the toughest of baby food stains. OMO is best suited for all machine types and is recommended by a leading washing machine manufacturer. It is the best-suited liquid to remove the stain.

Dreft Detergent

It is pretty convenient and straightforward to use. You need to turn the nozzle to ON position, the spray directly onto the stained area, and rub in. Wait for 2-3 minutes and then wash with a detergent in warm water. Once the stain is removed, dry the garment. The best thing about dreft is, it has been trusted by moms and recommended by pediatricians because it is gentle on the baby’s skin and its hypoallergenic laundry detergent.

It is specially formulated to remove 99% of the baby’s stain from clothes. It is recommended to go for stage 1 detergent as stage 1 formula is specifically designed for and best suited for newborns.

Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda

Last but not least, we’ve arm and hammer Super Washing Soda in the queue. It’s a suitable detergent for those looking to save a bit of cash as it’s categorized under the lowest cost-brands of all the detergent. It claims to deliver the clean you need. All you need to do is pour a little liquid onto the stained area, rub it, and then add the item immediately to the washer.

Some of the best things about this washing soda are that it is free from dyes, perfumes, and preservatives. It’s very gentle on the skin and works best for babies.

There is so much information available on nutrition these days, you may find yourself wondering what to believe when you start to research. From the Keto diet to low-carb to Paleo, it’s often hard to know which way is the right way, nutritionally speaking.

Proper nutrition is extremely important for everyone, therefore proper baby nutrition is an absolute must to give your child the best start in life. From introducing baby’s first foods to the toddler years, your baby needs to consume the correct nutrients to make sure they have the best chance at being healthy and developing to their full potential.

A lot of first-time parents might feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information out there on baby nutrition, and not all of it is completely accurate. Never fear, we are here to help sort through the mountain of misinformation and misleading claims. You may be confused and concerned, but feeding your children properly is not as difficult as it sounds.

Keep reading to learn more about how to keep your little ones healthy and happy with optimal baby nutrition.

Start Out Simple

For the first six months of your baby’s life, the choice of foods will be pretty simple. You are either going to breastfeed or you’ll use baby formula. You really don’t have any other choices during this time frame and there are pros and cons to each of the options.

Just keep in mind that your baby requires very specific nutrition at this stage of life which is why breast milk is best. There are specific things in breast milk that you just can’t get in infant formula and while we understand that some women either can’t or choose not to even try breastfeeding, there is no denying that breast milk is fall superior to formula. During the first six months of your baby’s life, it is the perfect time to have your photography session. Whether you are looking to photograph them as a newborn or waiting until they are a few months older, check out Lollie Claire Photography, your little one is in safe hands with her.

Breast milk contains exactly what your baby needs and can change every feeding to give them what they need! There are many years of research to back up the benefits of breastfeeding so you should always breastfeed your baby if it is an option.

Time To Experiment

Once your little one hits six months, you’ll be able to have a bit more fun with your baby’s diet. You still want to follow quite a strict diet nutrition-wise, but now you can introduce some soft foods and you’ll have more options other than breast milk or formula. Depending on how picky of an eater you are dealing with, you will be surprised at what they might take to.

You should start slowly, giving them one thing at a time, and waiting a few days to make sure they handle it well. This solid food is not going to be their main source of nutrition just yet, it’s more about getting them used to eating it. Try not to give them any sort of junk foods, and keep it as fresh and natural as you can – soft fruits and vegetables, as well as yogurts, are great things to start off with.

Someone’s Getting Hungry

Over the next few months, you will notice a massive improvement in how your baby handles meal time. They will start reaching for solid foods that you put in front of them and they may even try to feed themselves. Your choice of foods here is absolutely crucial as part of their natural development.

While processed foods and junk foods may seem very easy and convenient for busy parents, don’t fall into the trap of taking the easy way out – your child will thank you in the future. Getting them used to eating healthy fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains early on will ensure proper nutrition and set them on a good nutritional path in life.

Healthy Food Is The Key

Ensuring that your baby receives proper nutrition is not rocket science, it just takes a bit of effort and planning. If you start with healthy eating at a young age, staying healthy for the rest of their lives will be much easier. You shouldn’t rush your baby to try new foods, simply try a few things and see what comes naturally. As long as they’re eating good food, they will have the best chance at developing well.

How To Help Your Children Form a Healthy Relationship With Food

It’s natural to want the best for your children. You do all that you can to ensure that they will be healthy, happy, and set up for success down the road. You take the time to teach them how to be good stewards of the world and conscious of how their behavior affects those around them.

Your child is always learning and experiencing new things, and a lot of the behaviors and habits that they learn in their early childhood can carry into their later years. You will be doing your little ones an invaluable favor if the habits and behaviors happen to be positive ones. One of the most important teachings you can instill in them is how to have a healthy relationship with their food.

Why Starting Early Matters

What a child learns in the first two years of their life informs and shapes much of their future. It is during this time that a child develops the base knowledge of the world around them as well as the foundations of language. Because of this, much of what you do within the first two years will have a profound effect on how your child views and interacts with food.

Though we have a biological need for food, our desires and preferences are not hard-wired into us. This is where the psychology of food comes into play. Food can comfort you, remind you of past experiences you associate with the sight and smell of a particular dish, and help you to connect with others.

This is why it is important to pay close attention to what your child consumes day to day. It may not seem like a big deal to reward your little one with a sweet treat when you are proud of them for succeeding in something, but it increases the likelihood that they will associate sweets with those pleasurable feelings. In the future, they may feel a natural desire to reward themselves with unhealthy food after passing an exam or getting a promotion without truly understanding why.

Raised Real Review - The Honest Truth

Choosing the Right Foods

It’s no surprise that breastfeeding your baby is generally seen as the best way to give them a head start in their development. After all, it does provide them with all of the necessary nutrients to help them grow while also building up their immune system. Eventually though, whether you breastfeed or use formula, you will have to make the switch to solid foods.

When you do transition over to solid foods, you’re presented with one of the best opportunities to aid in your child’s development. While they will gain the inherent benefits of consuming new foods like the introduction of nutrients not found in breast milk or formula, it also provides them with the opportunity to explore new textures and tastes. This exploration is vital to the healthy development of a child’s brain, and it is one of the first opportunities an infant gets to learn and experience things by themselves.

When adding in solid foods, you are also given the chance to get a head start in introducing healthy foods to your child. While yes, your child will naturally have preferences to certain foods, if you make a conscious decision to feed them healthy items the likelihood that they will enjoy them later on in life will increase. This is also a good time to slowly introduce things like shellfish, peanuts, cow’s milk and other items that are likely to cause an allergic reaction to see if your baby has any sensitivities.

Companies like Little Spoon deliver fresh, organic baby food right to your door. With tantalizing mixtures like chia mango coconut milk and blueberry chickpea spinach pear rosemary, you can relax and think about having fun with your baby instead of stressing out trying to find time to cook and puree your own baby foods. Little Spoon takes the guesswork out of feeding your baby by preparing amazing and delicious blends that make sure your baby’s first 1,000 days are filled with the proper nutrition that will set them up for a lifetime of health and wellbeing. If you want to give Little Spoon a try, you can get 15% off your first order with coupon code FASHIONABLEWIFE.

Cultivating Good Habits

If your baby doesn’t seem to like any of the healthy options presented to them, don’t worry. It can often take up to 20 attempts with a new food before an infant will even try it, let alone express a preference for it. Keep introducing a wide variety of healthy foods with unique flavors and textures in order to help them develop their palate, and you will reap the rewards in later years.

Consider making your own baby food at home with a blender or food processor that is able to puree items. By making your own baby food, you are in direct control over exactly what your baby is exposed to, and you won’t have to worry about preservatives or any other worrisome ingredients. It is also a good opportunity to introduce a greater concentration of vegetables than what is generally found in store-bought baby foods.

Making your own baby food at home is rewarding, but you may often find yourself too busy to make a special meal for your child. If this is the case, don’t worry too much — store-bought baby food can also have health benefits. While baby food at home can have a higher concentration of the veggies your baby needs, it can end up having a higher caloric and fat content than store-bought. Store-bought baby foods tend to have a lower variety of protein options and tend to focus on red meat instead of things like fish that have oils which aid in mental development. Striking a balance between home-cooked and store-bought foods can provide your baby with the best of both worlds. It can be a lot of work trying to give your baby the best, but meal delivery services like Raised Real and Little Spoon aim to take the stress out of baby food at home.

Enjoying the Results

If you spend a significant portion of your child’s early life working to build up that idea of eating healthy by choosing the right foods and cultivating good habits, you will soon see your hard work pay off. The first and most obvious result is that your child will be healthy, more inclined to make healthy choices for themselves, naturally choosing to avoid processed sugars and other not-so-good food items on their own.

Another benefit to helping your child develop a healthy relationship with food is that they will naturally become a more adventurous eater. By exposing them to a variety of flavors and textures early on, they will build an appreciation for the novelty of trying new foods. By not giving into your child wants when they express a desire for sweet or salty snacks, you are helping to expand their palate and help them to be less picky eaters.

This confidence in trying new and exciting foods will carry on into their adult lives as well. If they end up encountering new foods while traveling with family, they will be less likely to balk at it because it isn’t familiar. Even if they don’t end up finding it palatable, they will have tried something new and gained that experience, helping to shape them as a person.

Conclusion

Giving your child a head-start in their relationship with food is simple but can be time-consuming. It takes practice and dedication, but implementing these tips and staying consistent with them will do your baby a world of good as you feed your baby food at home. Always remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and when it comes to your little one nothing is more important.

How To Deal With Babies & Gas

Many infants fart, and this is not a big deal to their mothers. However, excessive farting could be a sign that they are having difficulties with gas in their stomachs. This is common for kids between two weeks and four months. As a mother, you may be wondering how to deal with babies and gas and if excessive farting is actually a big deal.

Doctors say that most adult humans fart at least 23 times in a day, but babies should not be farting this much. More than once every couple of hours can be a signal of an issue. If your baby is farting more than this frequency, you should be concerned. Before we look at how to get rid of gas for such as an infant, we will discuss what the common symptoms that accompany these farts to help you understand what to look for in this case.

Symptoms of Baby Gas

Most children who fart excessively also bloat, burp or belch. Some fuss a lot while others experience stomach cramps that make them cry a lot. Baby gas also causes irritation and restlessness in a child. Some have constant hiccups while others experience flatulence. You may notice that the tummy of your baby is harder than it should be. An irregularity during urination as well as fever are also signs of baby gas.

Causes & Treatments of Gas In Babies

Underdeveloped digestive system

Babies are born with immature digestive systems. This inhibits quick digestion of foods such as proteins and fats that they get from breast milk. In the first month, your baby is learning how to digest food for the first time.

The muscles that are responsible for digestion are still developing. This makes the food they eat go through without a proper breakdown. It causes gas to develop through their intestines which lead to excessive farting. A child is likely to experience pain as they pass this gas making them cry excessively. This situation is temporary and may improve the development of their digestive system.

Lack of a balance in gut bacteria

At a tender age, a baby is born clean without sufficient bacteria flora which should digest breast milk.  Most bacteria that are found in 4 weeks baby are proteobacteria. This triggers production of gas which causes pain to an infant. Lots of proteobacteria make your baby fart excessively and cry.

With time, as you continue breastfeeding your child, they will pick good bacteria to help digest the food appropriately. Probiotics are the best way to stop farting of children since probiotics balance the bacteria in the baby’s gut. We highly recommend Evivo probiotics for babies to fix this issue.

Improper feeding techniques

Breastfeeding your baby directly or using baby bottles can either increase or reduce gas in a baby. Finding the right method to feed your baby will prevent them from swallowing gas. When breastfeeding, hold your baby in a position where their head goes above your breast to keep them from taking in the air. If your child swallows air, their digestive system struggles to break down lactose leading to the increase in intestinal gas. Now you know why your baby farts excessively.

A bottle to feed also affects the flow of milk inside their throat.  Ensure that you are doing it correctly to prevent them from swallowing gas. After your baby’s meal, put them at the right angle for them to burp so that you can eliminate gas trapped inside their system.

Allergy to milk protein

Do not assume that your baby may not react to artificial milk proteins. Unlike breast milk, some children are sensitive to formula food. Your child may negatively react to the whey or casein found in baby food which increases the rate of farting. Milk protein may cause inflammation in your baby’s digestive system which leads to flatulence.

The symptoms that accompany allergy of milk protein include congestion of the chest, diarrhea as well as rashes. You may also notice that your child’s stool may contain some mucus when changing their diapers. The best solution to this problem is using more breast milk instead of milk protein. Hypoallergenic formula is also a treatment for this allergy.

The shock from new surroundings

Studies reveal that it is possible for a one month baby to experience shock which leads to anxiety with the change from the surroundings. Since they are now out of your womb, a child may take time to learn how to respond to stimuli. Sensitivity to everything causes their brain to become overwhelmed by the new changes which lead to irritation and crying.  This fuss makes a child accumulate gas which increases farting. With time, they get used to their new environment and their bodies adjust accordingly.

Your diet

As a mam, the foods that you eat also affect how much gas your baby is likely to pass through farting.  Breastfeeding sometimes passes traces of your meals to your child. Children react to the foods we eat and if you are gassy, this, in turn, makes your child gassy. Ensure that you feed on healthy diets that don’t pass down the gas to them

Intolerance to lactose

A child’s mechanism is not wired to form sufficient lactase to break down lactose from breast milk. The lactose intolerance makes bacteria in a child’s large intestine increase fermentation causing smelly farts. This causes pain and abdominal cramps to a baby

Doctors advise that you drain the first milk from your breast to prevent lactose intolerance. They say that the breast contains foremilk and hindmilk. The first milk that comes out, which is the foremilk has more lactose than your hindmilk. It causes excess lactose in your baby if you don’t drain it before your baby feeds. Foremilk is also believed to increase flatulence.

Excessive feeding

Some women worry about a child going hungry thus may lead to overfeeding them. Remember that your child’s stomach is small and incapable of taking in too much milk. It prevents their digestive system from functioning properly and may lead to the production of intestinal gas which increases farting. It also causes tummy aches and flatulence. Rub the tummy of your child to prevent stomach aches from excess food as you peddle their feet.
